I Love Cambodia

·   0

A lot of people only know Cambodia from their history lessons due to the horrible period when the country had to suffer so painfully under the Khmer Rouge regime. But luckily, times changed and meanwhile, Cambodia became a very interesting country that is definitely worth a visit. Here’s a quick roundup with 5 reasons why you got to love Cambodia:

1. Lovely Khmer people

Cambodia had a rough and violent history in the 70′s and the Khmer folk endured a lot, but their spirit hasn’t been broken. Instead, it has bounced back with a childlike demeanor and sincere charm. The people appear content with the simplicity of their lives. Many appear a bit shy with foreigners, but throw them a smile and they will come back with a grin to melt your heart.

2. Unique Angkor Wat

Apart from the lovely people, there are some destinations within Cambodia that are absolutely worth a visit. First, there is Angkor Wat. This huge temple complex is the country’s landmark. You can spend days exploring Cambodia’s pride, build in the first half of the 12th century, and enjoy the evening watching the breath taking view over the temples during sunset. The temple’s home town Siem Reap, with its relaxed vibe, is absolutely worth a visit also.

3. Sunny Sihanoukville

Another Cambodian treasure can be found in the South of the country. The area around Sihanoukville is known for its beautiful beaches and the lonely islands that can be easily reached from here. While backpackers enjoy the bars of Ochheuteal Beach that tempts with free drinks and fun parties, Otres Beach is incredibly quiet and relaxing.  For a little “Cast Away” experience, stay some days at one of the lonely islands like Koh Ta Kiev, sleep in a tree house without doors or windows, and shower with water out of a bucket.

4. Phnom Penh-and its bar scene

Cambodia’s capital is probably most known for two sights, the killing fields and the torture museum. Both are really informative but also very depressing places to visit.  But even though Phnom Penh might be by far not to be as developed as other Southeast Asian capitals, it definitely has its very own unmistakable charm. You can find beautiful cultural sights, like the king’s palace, a fun cinema called “The Flicks” and not to forget an amazing bar scene! No matter if you are looking for an alternative Berlin-style underground club or a chic Martini bar à la Paris, Phnom Penh can offer it!

5. So cheap!

South East Asia is generally known for being comparatively cheap – but Cambodia offers every tourist’s dream price-service-ratio! No matter if you want to go shopping, out eating, or for drinks, if you want to get a nice accommodation, a private transfer or a relaxing massage –  everything is possible for a fraction of what it would cost you at home.
So come to Cambodia, explore its beauty and diversity – and live like a king for a reasonable travel budget. You will love it!
