Pailin Casino, Cambodia

Border Crossing & Casino Area The locals refer to this area as simply Pbrohm. This was a main lifeline of the Khmer Rouge during the years of fighting with the government. Food, supplies and weaponry were brought over from Thailand here.

The action today is of the gaming type with the Flamingo Casino open for business and another under construction. The casino sees a lot more business than the one in town, as the Thai people that represent the vast majority of customers like the idea of staying within spitting distance of Thailand. So if you like tossing money away, you have several choices in Pailin. There are also a few seedy looking karaoke bars with ladies working near the casinos and border. As for using Pailin as a border crossing to and from Thailand: The Thais have no problem with it and will issue you a Thai visa or stamp you out between 7 am and 5 pm. The problem is on the Cambodian side as the immigration police say that it?s not an officially sanctioned crossing and there is no way that a foreigner can cross here. So for now it?s best to sticks with Poipet and Koh Kong for land crossings. Getting to the border is the interesting part.

About 5 km on the way from Pailin is a small wooden bridge going over the Oh-chah-rah River. The water coming down from the mountains is clean, so a swim here is an inviting prospect. You also pass by the bombed shell of a tank, reminding you which side of the border you are on. Tank bodies just sit where they die in Cambodia and simply become another part of the landscape. The border is easy to get to ?just the one turn on the map. It takes just under a half hour and is around 180 baht for roundtrip moto-taxi.
Pailin is a province in western Cambodia at the northern edge of the Cardamom Mountains near the border of Thailand. This province is surrounded by Battambang Province, and was officially carved out of Battambang to become a separate administrative division after the surrender of the Ieng Sary faction of the Khmer Rouge in 1996. Pailin is known to much of the world for having long been a stronghold of the Khmer Rouge, remaining under their control long after they were defeated in 1979 and serving from 1994-1998 as the capital of the "Provisional Government of National Union and National Salvation of Cambodia."
On 22 December 2008, King Norodom Sihamoni signed a Royal Decree that changed the municipalities of Kep, Pailin and Sihanoukville into provinces, as well as adjusting several provincial borders.
History
Pailin was originally a small forest zone full of animal and several precious stones. Pailin is the transform word from the original Pan Len ,referred by a tale about around the 18th or 19th century, there were a group of hunters who chased the wild animals farther and farther until they reached the present-day Pailin where, then, was of jungles of high trees and some fields by the canal which was called small river such as Tong small river. The hunters saw otters that were swimming and they ran away when they saw people. Then, the hunters went to see the place where the otters played together. They saw small bright rocks and everybody took a rock to show their friends and their relatives in their home land. Arriving in the home land, there were residents (it was said they were Kula people in Chanthaburi Province Siam) knew that the rocks were valuable so they took and broke the rocks to polish into gems with good purity. That was why they went to buy gems from the hunters. The hunters knew that it was way of earning a living, they often tried to go to take the rocks from the old place. At that time, Pailin began to faced as the business place.
The frequent going and coming from that place made them call Phee Leng (Khmer:áž—េáž›េáž„) due to the playing of the otters that they saw at the first time. But the residents in Siam pronounced Phee as Phai(Khmer:áž•េ) and Leng as Len (Khmer:áž¡េáž“) or Lin with their Siamese sound as Pea Lean (Khmer:áž•េáž¡េáž“). During the control of France of that area, it was written in Latin with the sound and morphology of the words as Phailin. Later the word was shortened as Pailin by omitting " H "ាaim of a difficult pronunciation.
In the late 1970s, Pailin was a prosperous town stemming from the extensive gem deposits in the surrounding countryside. Because of its resources, it was one of the first cities invaded by the Khmer Rouge when they began their major offensive against the national government. The city offered no resistance and the Khmer Rouge soldiers were greeted as liberators as they marched into town. At this point, the deposed king had allied himself with the KR and most residents believed that the KR were fighting to restore him to power. It was not long, though, before most residents were rounded up for a forced march to the countryside to work in rice paddies. Those believed to have connections to the government were killed. The KR used proceeds from mining in the Pailin area to fund their offensive and later their government once they gained national power. When the invading Vietnamese Army threw them from power, they retreated to Pailin, where many former KR leaders remain today.
Some leaders went into hiding in fear of punishment for their crimes, although other leaders lived openly in the province. It is said that 70% of the area's older men were fighters for the Khmer Rouge,[who?] but none of the regular fighters have yet been brought to justice.[citation needed] As of September 2007, Pailin's remaining Khmer Rouge leaders were being rounded up to face justice by an international tribunal, including Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.[4]
In the recent years, Pailin suddenly meet the decline of Economy and Business. However, a new wave of tourism began found depend on its ancient temple, natural forest, animals and especially the precious stones.
Tourism Attractions
Wat Phnom Yat:built by Shan migrants from Myanmar in 1922,is a holy place for worship in the heart of Pailin with includes an old pagoda, similar to the Kola pagoda. With loads of folk tales and legends in the area, the wat is the centre of popular devotion, for residents of Pailin and visitors alike upon many ancient structures on Phnom Yat, including big and small stupas and Asroms or hermitages, places for meditation. The building up of the place is originally coming up with a folktales about At that time, there were a husband and a wife who had the same names, Yart. They worked as gem miners in Pailin area. When they grew old they went to take meditation on a mountain which is now called Phnom Yart. The Pailinners who often went to sell gems in Siam bought some hand guns and rifles in order to protect their property and residence. When they were bored, they took guns and went to hunt animals in the wood for pleasure. Such a pleasure hunting made all spirits living in the forest surprised. One day the most powerful spirit transformed himself to meet grandfather Yart and grandmother Yart so as to send verbal message to ask the grandparents to tell the hunters not to fire at animals all over the woods which caused all spirits to be frightened, lose their children and grandchildren. " So, stop firing, we will help you with finding precious stone, " the spirit said, " in order to become rich and prosperous." " But if you become the rich, build a pagoda at this mountain site and then play music with peacock dance every holyday, " said the spirit. The spirit disappeared soon after telling, Grandpa Yart and grandma Yart took the message and went to inform all residents. The residents obeyed the spirit's advice.[5]
Wat Rattanak Sopoan:At the foot of Phnom Yat is another pagoda, Wat Rattanak Sopoan. On the walls of the enclosure surrounding the pagoda is a bas-relief depicting the Hindu saga of the churning of the Ocean of Milk.[6]
Phnom Kiev Waterfall (Blue Mountain):Local at Sangkat Steung Kach, Khan Saha Krau in 20-Kilometer distance from the Pailin town, set on the nearest border of Thailand among some parts are already been through to the thai area. The rainforest and highly source of natural with an extremely popular tropical zone in Pailin,Faced the famous history during Khmer Rouge, Phnom Kiev Waterfall was a place for Khmer rouge killer to be hide and escape beyond 1979 and now collaborates with foreign tourist for becoming their adventure area. It provided several different kinds of birds and animal which lived beneath the forest and the waterfall. No any Tiger and dangerous animal to be found. However, snakes are common as some small cobra and a large python revealed to be stayed in.[7] This natural resort is a specific tourism place after Wat Phnom Yat.

The hotel lobby is beautiful. The rooms are beautiful. But that's it. I would never go back to BaVet again. BUT >>> I would stay at the Titan King again if I did return.

Koh Tonsai or Rabbit Island

Joining Rabbit Island Holiday with Visit Cambodia Travel, you will enjoy a great memorable moment and experience the ancient temple of Angkorian Style and Rabbit Island Beach, sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming.
Beach on Kep's Rabbit IslandKoh Tonsai or Rabbit Island lies just off the coast from Kep in the province of the same name – a 3hr drive or so from Phnom Penh. Formerly known as Kep-sur-mer, the popular and fashionable pre-Khmer Rouge seaside resort is currently experiencing something of a renaissance. (Firstly, there aren’t really any rabbits whatsoever on the island but supposedly the island itself is actually rabbit shaped, if seen from a certain angle, though we reckon that depends on how many Angkor Beers you drink beforehand!)
The island is at present, pretty much unspoilt – i.e. there’s nothing much there – except a couple of beach shacks doing drinks, fried rice and the ubiquitous, (for Kep), crabs, plus a few basic bamboo huts for back packers wanting to get seriously off the beaten track. (No full moon parties around here).  How long it’ll stay that way remains to be seen and there are frequent rumours of Khmer/Taiwanese/Korean businessmen/generals/developers constructing resorts on the island’s main beach. (A nice sandy strip with clear water and flat land behind.) Local myth has it that the land’s already been sold to developers for a large sum of money, on at least one occasion, only to find that a crafty local fishing family’s claims were actually non-existent and no legitimate deeds or paperwork ever appeared.
Anyway for now it’s frequented by day-trippers, half a dozen at a time aforementioned backpackers, and the occasional All Points East tour group getting some beach time in before heading back to Phnom Penh and the reality of flights home!
Not much to do on Koh Tonsai except sit around on the clean, sandy beach, have a dip in the clear, sheltered water or drink a cold one and crack open a crab, though for the energetic a trail does lead around the island if you want to explore further.
Koh Tonsai is a short, 30 minute, boat ride from the pier in Kep. A day trip to Koh Tonsai is included on our Beyond Angkor tour; all our off-the-beaten-track Cambodia trips can be found here and for more detailed info on the island try our friends at Travelfish. Cheers!
Slow boat to Rabbit Island.

I once, in my younger backpacking days, got crabs from a hostel bed in Malaysia. They weren’t the kind I wanted. They were the kind that required a trip to the chemist to get a pharmaceutical-grade shampoo. Needless to say, me and crabs in Asia have a bad relationship.
So it was refreshing, here in the Cambodian seaside town of Kep, to find the kind of crabs you want to get. Kep is famous for the delicious crustaceans and the best place in town to find them is at the Crab Markets along the shoreline.

Every morning boats arrive from fishing expeditions in the nearby waters and islands off the coast. Their hauls are offloaded at the market and within hours find their way onto the plates of diners. My lunch one day is a pile of fresh juicy crabs cooked with the green pepper corns, which this region is also famous for (although it’s called ‘Kampot pepper’ for the nearby town of Kampot where many of the farms have bases). And for just 3 or 4 dollars, the food is a bargain.
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
Kep itself is a nice place to stop for a couple of days. The beach is not the best you’ll find along the southern coast of the country but it seems popular with Cambodians on the weekend.
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
The vendors with food, drink, deckchairs and inflatable toys aren’t so interested in me. They’ve got their eyes set on the local families who are arriving at the beach with cars overflowing with children and holiday supplies.
There are quite a few guesthouses and hotels here but they’re decentralised so there’s no hub of town, as such. Life in Kep is laidback and, like the structure of the town, is based around the beach rather than efficiency or practicality.
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
A walk around the mountain that overlooks Kep gives you a view out to the ocean on one side and the green fields on the other. It takes longer to walk around the mountain than around the town but it gives you the better perspective of place that only height can provide.
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
kep beach, cambodia, kep, crabs, kampot pepper, beaches in cambodia
You realise from the mountain that, although it’s a pleasant part of the country, there’s much more to explore. I can see out in the water an island known as Rabbit Island. That’s tomorrow’s destination.

Trip in Koh Yor Beach, Koh Kong

Koh Kong is the most southwestern province of Cambodia. It is one of the biggest provinces in the whole country with a long undeveloped coastline and a mountainous, forested and largely inaccessible interior, which embraces part of the Cardamom Mountains, the biggest coherent rainforest of Southeast Asia. Its tourist attractions include abundant wildlife; big waterfalls and casinos on the border to Thailand, while an Export Processing Zone and new port facilities are being developed for international trade.

The province is an increasingly popular gateway to Cambodia from Hat Lek in southern Thailand, in part of the reasonably direct access to the port and beach resort town of Sihanoukville. While this was previously a gruelling journey by boat and pickup on rough bumpy roads using small ferries at river crossings, the donation by the Thai government of new road infrastructure is improving access greatly.
Many travelers see Koh Kong only briefly as they pass through on the way to/from Thailand, but that is changing and the province is becoming something of an ‘eco-destination.
CLIMATE
Cambodia can be visited throughout the year. However, those plans to travel extensively by road should be avoided the last two months of the rainy season when some countryside roads may be impassable. The average temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius; the minimum temperature is about 16 degrees. December and January are the coolest months, whereas the hottest is April.

HOW TO GET THERE
Koh Kong may be approached directly from Thailand via the Cham Yeam crossing, and from Sihanoukville, Phnom Penh and Kampot by road. Several bus companies offer direct bus service between Koh Kong, Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh. Buses arrive and depart the bus station in Koh Kong. Bus company offices are clustered along Street 3 in the center of town. Read More…

THINGS TO DO & SEE IN KOH KONG

BEACHES AND ISLANDS
There are a few beaches within easy driving distance of the main town area. The nearest small beach resort on the opposite side of the river is popular with the locals. The resort has a restaurant by the water, bungalows and a muddy little beach. Koh Yor Beach near Ba Blong Village along the beach is much better as characterized by its long, narrow, secluded, white sand beach with a few little oceanside seafood shacks. The island of Koh Koh Khoa in the Gulf of Thailand, about a 45-minutes boat ride from Koh Kong City, has several unspoiled completely untouristed white sand beaches.

KOH KONG SAFARI WORLD
This site has a fully fledged animal theme park complete with animal shows and a small zoological park exhibiting tigers, bears, ostriches, deer and several other species from all around the world. There are regular scheduled dolphin shows, crocodile feedings, bird shows and orangutan boxing shows. Though some of the shows may be unfit for everyone’s taste, the animals appear to be fairly fed and cared for according to local standards.

WATERFALLS
Koh Kong is rich with waterfalls and rapids. The rugged rivers that run down from the Cardamom Mountains harbor spectacular jungled falls, some near to town, whilst others further upstream. Many of the falls are but a trickle in the dry season, and best visited during the wet season.
The Ta Tai Waterfalls, the nearest to town and the most popular local falls, sit close to the main road about 20km to the east. The falls are wide and two-levelled with a drop of about 6m, situated in a jungle gorge and fall over the rapids. Others such as the Koh Por Falls, the Tuo Kokir Rapids and the impressive jungle gorge Kbal Chhay Falls sit further upriver within a day trip distance.

CHI PHAT
Chi Phat, though hardly the most beautiful village in Cambodia, is an excellent base for a variety of outdoor activities. Visitors may swim in the river; cycle (or take a motorbike taxi) to several sets of rapids; and hike in the following areas: the forest to explore waterfalls; Phnom Peang Boran which is one of very few such sites in the Cardamoms and the only one known to have jars and wooden coffins of the heroes of mountain tribes (Khmer Leu) who lived in the Cardamoms Mountain during the late Angkorian era about 300 to 400 years ago; and a grassy opening in the middle of the jungle with a seasonal pond called Veal Ta Prak. Monkeys, hornbills and other rainforest creatures may often be seen along the banks of Stung Proat (an unlogged tributary of the Preak Piphot River accessible by boat). A village elder informed that the last time a tiger was seen in these parts was 1975.

SCUBA DIVING

Koh Kong’s first PADI scuba diving operation offers PADI courses (Fun Dives and Beginner through Professional courses) and scuba diving trips to local islands and reefs as well as multi day excursions. Koh Kong Divers report excellent visibility and frequent Black Tip and Grey Reef Shark sightings.

SHOPPING
Most of the products are imported from Thailand, except vegetables, fruits and some local foods. There are a couple of clothing shops across the street from the eastern side of the market selling clothes from Thailand as well. Some small shops along the road on the southern side of the market stay open until 10pm.

KOH KONG RESTAURANTS
The city is small with a couple of dozen restaurants in all, including just a few foreign-run restaurant and bars. Most of the restaurants are quite local and the emphasis is usually on seafood. The Thai food also is particularly good in Koh Kong – the restaurant at the casino and the Baan Peakmai in town both serve some of the best in the area. For sunset, whether for dinner or just for sundowners, The Bay Cafe and Cafe Laurent on the river road near the bridge both offer the nicest sunset views over the river.
Nightlife in Koh Kong tends to shut down comparatively early, with most places closing between 10 and midnight. Cafe Laurent and Bob’s Ice Cream are popular. The latest places open in town are the Cambodian clubs including the Pisey Club next to Apex Guesthouse and Pun Pun on the main road, both dark, boxy and loud, offering cocktail bars and catering primarily to young locals.
